Warrior Met Coal Underground Bunker

Warrior Met Coal Underground Bunker

Located in central Alabama, Warrior Met Coal partnered with GMS to construct a critical piece of underground infrastructure.

With a constant focus on safety, teamwork, and precision, the GMS team worked nearly 1,800 feet below the surface to help construct a large-scale underground bunker system designed to support raw coal storage and material flow.

A Massive Underground Storage Facility

Using the newly installed conveyor system, raw coal is transported into this massive underground storage facility.

Engineered to store more than 9,000 tons of raw coal, the bunker stands over 100 feet tall and runs nearly the length of a football field.

Coal flow is distributed through a 10-hopper feeder system, engineered to balance material across the bunker and deliver a consistent feed onto the lower conveyor.

Built Below the Surface

Constructing a system of this scale underground came with unique challenges.

Each hopper had to be transported underground in sections, moved through tight access points, and assembled in place using overhead crane and rigging systems. Every component was installed to meet both structural and mechanical design requirements.

The project also included an underground control room, allowing operators to monitor the process and make real-time adjustments as needed.

Purpose-Built for Controlled Output

Another unique aspect of the project was the purpose-built tripper drive constructed at the top of the bunker.

Driven by its own belt drive, it feeds coal into the bunker below, helping balance material across the hoppers and maintain controlled output.

Trusted Mining Solutions

More than a construction effort, this project shows what is possible when experience, planning, and execution come together underground.

Modern mining demands more than labor. Underground, where there is no margin for error, it demands precision, safety, and trust.

That is where GMS does its best work.
